Women Wielding the Word: Patsy Burnette

Women Wielding the Word: Patsy Burnette

Ever notice how we begin to act like the people we spend time with? Without intending to, we find ourselves using the same phrases or responses as our friends or family.

Patsy Burnette’s desire is to become more like Jesus. She’s pursued that goal in the best possible way – by spending time with Him, reading His Word. And it shows.

While I’ve never met Patsy in real life, as a blogging friend, I have seen her humility. Her gift of encouragement shines through my screen with such intensity, I find myself humbled as I witness how passionately she serves her readers and fellow bloggers.

Women Wielding The Word

Sharing stories of how God has impacted our lives encourages us and builds our faith. It’s one of my favorite things to do!

This series is meant to be an encouragement to you. I’ve asked other bloggers to share what their time with God looks like and how the Bible has impacted their lives. No two stories are the same. Every woman’s devotional life looks different.

Be encouraged as you read Patsy’s story of turning to her Bible for the power to change from the inside out. She’s learning to love God’s Word and live it out!

More Like Him, Less Like Me

He must increase, but I must decrease. John 3:30

All Scripture is breathed out by God and is profitable for teaching, reproof, correction, and training in righteousness.”

2 Timothy 3:16

I don’t know about you, but I’m not much for making New Year’s resolutions. Even when we do, by this time of year many of us have forgotten what they were. The new year is great for reevaluating your journey, but we can do that at any time.

In January 2015, I did that. I reevaluated my spiritual journey and made a positive lifestyle change. I committed to completely immerse myself in Scripture that year on a daily basis. I longed for God to make me more like Him and less like me. I needed this!

InstaEncouragements is Born

A few months into the journey, I felt the need to share what God was teaching me. I started creating daily memes and called them InstaEncouragements. I shared these on my personal social media. Friends liked them and reposted. Soon, it became obvious that InstaEncouragements needed its own home.

InstaEncouragements Instagram was born, followed by Pinterest, Facebook, and Twitter. As InstaEncouragements gained followers, people asked, “Can we buy these in print?” After months of prayer, we opened our little Etsy shop. A couple of years later, the blog was born.

I didn’t set out to create a brand, a social media presence or a blog. I set out to become more like Him and less like me. All along the way, I asked God, “What’s next?”

The One Book That Changes Me

"They that know God will be humble; they that know themselves cannot be proud." John Flavel

From the beginning, I also hoped to be an encouragement to others who wanted the same. But, I didn’t want to only be an encourager. I also wanted to equip others so they could be encouragers, too! That’s where my heart is. I want to be more like Him and less like me and I want to encourage you and make you an encourager.

In doing so, I read parts of the Bible I’d never read before and learned new truths. I read parts of the Bible I’d read hundreds of times before, and still learned new truths! God’s Word is so relevant to every part of our lives and every part of His Word is relevant.

The Bible is our textbook for life, It’s God’s love letter to us. It has the answers to all the hard questions we struggle with. It’s filled with wisdom and truth for the asking. The Bible is the one book that can make you and me more like Him and less like us.

My Bible Reading This Year

This year, I am reading the Bible in chronological order of book authorship. I’m using this Bible Reading Itinerary. I’m also keeping a daily journal of what God is showing me through His love letter. I started in January with Job.

Did you know Genesis is not the first book of the Bible written? The book of Job was first. From Job, I went on to Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers, Deuteronomy, Joshua, and now I’m in Judges.

Every day is a new adventure and not a day goes by that I haven’t seen some new truth. Most every day there is some nugget of truth there waiting for me that I needed that day!

Another thing I’m doing is I am not only reading but also listening to the Bible. You can do this on your commute! This has helped me comprehend and remember so much more of what I’ve read. I’m an auditory learner, and I need to hear that spoken Word as well as read it. So, doing both at the same time is super helpful to me!

Ask God What’s Next

I hope this encourages you to be intentional about immersing yourself in God’s love letter to you. I’m a girl asking God, “What’s next?” and waiting for Him to show me. He’s showing me through His love letter how to be more like Him and less like me, and He’d love to show you, too!

The great thing is, you don’t have to begin on January 1, you can start today! Be intentional about becoming more like Him by immersing yourself in His love letter. I promise you, friend, it will be life-changing and there’s no telling how God will use it in your life. I know!

  1. Patsy, this post is so inspirational. I am in the midst of rebuilding my faith. Thank you for telling us about your spiritual journey. It shows me that it can be done and that is so encouraging. I believe that we need to reduce our “self” to very little (or nothing) and be more like Him. What a powerful statement!

  2. I enjoyed hearing the journey of InstaEncouragment! And I enjoyed hearing your journey, too. I did not grow up attending church regularly and was not a Christian until my later teenage years. I’ve always been thankful that my church then encouraged people to read the Bible through. I’ve been doing so ever since, though not necessarily within a year every time. The Bible was truly grounding and life-changing for me. That is my passion, as well, to encourage women to get into the Word of God for themselves.

  3. Thank you, Barbara! It’s so important to be part of a Bible-believing and Bible-teaching church! As Christians, the Bible is our textbook for life. How are we going to know how to live without reading it? I’m glad to hear that it was grounding and life-changing for you. It was for me as well.

  4. Patsy, wonderful post. I am so grateful we can start right where we are, whenever we would like. More like Him, less like me. Amen and joining you, sweet friend, in praying for this in my life as well.

  5. So many of us want to be more like him and less like me. And the way we do it is so simple we almost overlook it. Just reading the bible and spending time in his word. No plans to buy. No monthly membership. No pushups to complete. Just spending time with our creator. Thanks for reminding us that this is something we all can do.

    • I, for one, Theresa am glad we don’t have to do pushups! You are right though that the way to become more like Him and less like me is simple—spending time in His Word and with Him in prayer.

  6. This is great! I’ve only known InstaEncouragements through her blog and link up. I’m excited to check out the original memes that go with it. I love thinking that we need to be more like Him, less like me. My reading plan currently is The Bible Projects 365 day through the Bible in year and even with studying the Word of God for more than half my life, I learn and understand more every day. More like Him, less like me!

    • Isn’t it amazing, Wendy, how we can read the Bible over and over again, yet still it is alive and fresh every time and we are continually discovering new truths? And I constantly have to remind myself of the privilege I have to hold God’s Word in my hands. Not everyone, even today, has that privilege.

  7. I am currently in a “what’s next” season. I realized that I need to seek God on another level than what I have been. As you said, I need to “immerse” myself in His Word. So encouraging. 💞🙏🏽

  8. Patsy,

You are such an encouragement in my life. Thank you for pointing us straight to God and His word.

I love reevaluating my spiritual walk each January, but I agree it can be done anytime. Many times God changes my direction as the year goes on.

    • Maree, that happens to me almost every year – a change of direction in my Bible reading/study. I’m old enough now that I’ve come to expect it, so it doesn’t throw me for a loop or make me feel like a failure if I abandon an original plan. No time in God’s Word is EVER wasted!
