It’s so easy to get caught up in our own ideas or the world’s ideas about who we are or who we should be. But what does God say? Who does God say that I am? Who am I in Christ? This series takes a journey through God’s Word to discover the truth about who we are in Him.
“He has delivered us from the domain of darkness and transferred us to the kingdom of his beloved Son” (Colossians 1:13)
In This Dark World, But Not Of It
This world sure feels awfully dark sometimes. It’s tempting to feel that we need to withdraw from the darkness, to escape and hide away. It can feel like the darkness is oppressing, consuming, defeating.
But as followers of Christ, we don’t need to escape the darkness of this world in the sense that we need to be saved from it. We are saved from it!
Just as Jesus was in this world, but not of this world, so are we. Our home is with Him.
The darkness of this world does not have dominion over us!
Equipped, Empowered, & Sent
While we are not of this world, we have been sent into this world! We are here for a purpose – His purpose. God has granted to us His Spirit to equip and empower us to fulfill His great commission – to go into all the world and preach the Good News of Jesus Christ! (Acts 1:8; Mark 16:15)
I encourage you to read what David Mathis wrote about this here.
From Darkness to Light
Again Jesus spoke to them, saying, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will not walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.” (John 8:12)
Do you believe that? If you’re a follower of Jesus Christ, you do not walk in darkness.
Light exposes. It shows us what’s there. It guides us. When we follow Jesus, we can be sure of where we’re going. We can have discernment, knowing Truth from lies. We don’t have to live in confusion.
Your word is a lamp to my feet
and a light to my path. (Psalm 119:105)
Send out your light and your truth;
let them lead me; (Psalm 43:3)
Live It Out
Is there an area of your life full of unknowns? Are you feeling like you’re “in the dark” about what to do or what’s next? God promises that when we ask for wisdom, He will give it to us (James 1:5). Instead of feeling defeated and worrying about it, take a moment to pray right now. Cast your burden on the Lord (1 Peter 5:7) and ask Him for wisdom. Then wait, believing that He is faithful to keep His promise!
As you go out into the world today, when you start to feel like a minority as a Child of God, or you start becoming discouraged by the darkness that surrounds you, praise Jesus for being the Light of the world. Ask Him how He would have you shine in the darkness today.
“You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden. Nor do people light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a stand, and it gives light to all in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven. (Matthew 5:14-16)
