The Gospel

The “Gospel” simply means the “Good News”. The Good News of Jesus Christ is that He has set us free from sin and death and has made a way for us to have a personal relationship with God for eternity.

Romans 3:23 tells us that “all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God“. God is holy and righteous and just. Because we “fall short” of His standards, without intervention, we cannot be in relationship with Him. Isaiah 59:2 tells us that “your iniquities have made a separation between you and your God, and your sins have hidden his face from you so that he does not hear.

Why does separation from God matter?

Romans 6:23 says “For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.2 Thessalonians 1:8-9 tell us that a day is coming when God will judge those who don’t know Him and who have not accepted the truth of the Gospel. Those without a relationship with Christ will suffer Hell for eternity.

That sounds like bad news! So what’s the Good News?

The Good News is that we can be saved from eternal damnation and actually enjoy a personal relationship with God now and forever!

The penalty for sin is death. To save us from having to pay for our own sins, and because of God’s love for us, Jesus Christ – God’s Son – came to earth, lived a sinless life and then gave Himself as a sacrifice for our sins. He took our sin upon Himself and was crucified. The price for my sin and your sin was paid!

But it didn’t end there. Three days later, Jesus rose from the dead! 1 Corinthians 15:3-4 tell us that “Christ died for our sins in accordance with the Scriptures, that He was buried, that He was raised on the third day.”

I don’t deserve to stand before our Holy God. But because of Jesus’ righteousness and the sacrifice He made for me, I can! I have been set free from the condemnation I deserve for my sin.

So, how can you be saved?

Acknowledge that you are a sinner in need of a Savior. 1 John 1:8 says that “If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves and the truth is not in us.” We know that we have sinned because God gave us His law in Exodus 20 – the Ten Commandments. No one has kept those laws perfectly. (Remember Romans 3:23.)

1 John 1:9 promises that “if we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. That’s Good News!

Believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of God who lived in perfect obedience to God on the earth, died on the cross for your sins, and rose again to be seated at the right hand of God for eternity.

John 3:16-17 says “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life.

It’s so simple that we often try to complicate it. But God desires that every single person would be saved (1 Timothy 2:4), so He kept it simple!

Repent of your sin and put your faith in Jesus Christ alone. When you do, you are free from sin and death and are made holy in the eyes of God, able to enjoy eternal relationship with Him! That’s the Gospel!
